Botox for Frown lines answering all your questions

Botox for frown line

Frown lines can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, muscle movement, and sun exposure. Various treatments are available for frown lines, but Botox injections are the most popular ones. Many people want to know how long it takes for Botox to work. What does it feel like when you get your injection? How many units do they need? These are all great questions that everyone should ask their injector before they have treatment done. Let's answer some of these frequently asked questions about injecting Botox to treat frown lines!

Botox starts working after how long?

Botox typically takes 7 days before you will notice results. After you get Botox treatment, the muscles that cause frown lines starts to relax and soften. This is why some people start getting Botox cosmetic when they are planning 2 weeks of vacation because it takes about two weeks (10 days) of relaxing your face for the best results.

Is it painful to receive a Botox injection?

Getting an injection can be scary no matter what but we always tell our patients that the injections only last less than 5 minutes and they do not feel much more than a pin prick and sometimes some pressure (like a mosquito bite). The process is fairly quick and straightforward however there is a bit of a learning curve on how to get the best results. Injectors start by marking where you need injections and then they clean your skin.

How many units do I need for my face?

This will vary depending on what area of the face we are treating and the severity of your frown lines. We typically give between 8-12 units in most areas however we can adjust this amount based on how severe your wrinkles are, however remember less is more! A good injector will know how much Botox you need without overdoing it - so ask them before treatment.

Do Botox injections last long?

Just like any injection, Botox will start wearing off after 4-6 months however it can last up to 6-9 months depending on what area you get treated and how severe your wrinkles were initially. Just like any other injection, it requires touch ups every 4-6 months to maintain that smooth look.

Do Botox injections wear off after a certain period of time?

It typically takes about 4-6 months before your injections start wearing off - this is completely normal since your body starts to naturally break down the product after about 3 months! The good thing is that you can get touch ups at any time during those 4-6 months if you feel like your lines are coming back or if they are looking too severe. Touch ups are typically given at 90 days, 180 days and 270 days.

What is the optimum amount of time I should wait between Botox treatments?

We always encourage patients to take a good picture of their face every 90 days so they have something to compare the next time they come in for treatment - this makes it easier for our injectors. We typically do not recommend starting Botox right before a big event or vacation because we want to make sure that you get the best possible result from your treatment! Once your wrinkles are gone, staying out of the sun and using a good sunscreen as well as avoiding alcohol and dehydration will help your Botox last as long as possible.
